Cauliflower Video Stills
Aug/100
Last week Dan le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip put up some stills on their site from the Cauliflower video I directed, you can find them here.
These are stills I pulled from the 4K RED footage and colour corrected myself as if they were photos, inspired by Greg Williams who recently has been conducting his photoshoots with a RED camera, creating videos and making his stills photography from the RED footage. The RED shoots at a 4K resolution (off the top of my head I think it’s around 12 megapixels or something) and with the quality of lenses a frame taken out of RED video footage is as good as any image taken on a DSLR.
Here’s two frames from the video I created as still photos:

It’s worth noting that neither of these stills actually feature in the final edit of the video.
Contemplation
Jun/100
I’ve been sitting on a whole bunch of new portraits photographs featuring Lillybet I’ve been too busy to edit. I’m finally getting round to them and I’m really enjoying trying some new correction techniques in Photoshop.
I’ve been thinking a lot about photography and colour correction/manipulation trying to reason why I would edit something the way I do, rather than simply editing it to try new ideas out or because something looks cool and yes I’m still experimenting a lot especially with portraiture, but as with my film work I’d like there to be some overriding idea behind everything I do. Some of my work has to do with memory or capturing a particular feeling that evokes a memory (be it of mine or of the viewers) but I also like my films and images to be self contained, I want to take the audience into another world where the story or image has its own set of rules, look and feeling. That’s ideally what I want to achieve, that and a compelling story, characters and images. It doesn’t always work out like that but hey, I’m still developing here.
When I showed this to Lillybet she said it looked like she was in a dream and I’ve always favored the notion that watching a film should be like entering a dream world/state, which is why seeing a film in the cinema in a dark room, in silence, is such an important experience. In my opinion anyway. But my opinion happens to be right.

Leni Ward in the Forest
May/100
Taken today while location scouting for a music video I’m directing for Leni Ward, shooting this Friday and Saturday.
The land is owned by the very generous Don at Paintball Jungle in Sherwood Forest, check out the site www.paintball-jungle.co.uk.
I highly recommend paintballing.
Cons
May/100
Starting a batch of photos edited with the aim of a more “filmic” look to the previous, high contrast images.
Graveyard Greenhouse

Here we go, the last of this set. One more of these and I may not been able to look at another greenhouse for a while – not that greenhouses come into my field of vision very often or play an important part in my life.
